Medieval Musical Instruments

Oak Hill Parent, Kate McWilliams, specializes in building medieval musical instruments. Join us as for a special evening as she shares her instruments as well as stories about medieval musicians and the process of recreating their instruments. Come meet instruments you’ve never heard before, like the hurdy-gurdy, rebec, and tromba marina!

Kate has been building instruments for over twenty years. Her customers span the globe and include professionals, universities, and amateurs. An acknowledged expert on one of the sole surviving medieval instruments, the British Museum Citole, she worked closely with the museum on scientific and conservation treatment of their instrument, subsequently organizing an international symposium and publication about the citole. She loves to share her instruments with students: their curious shapes, colors, and sounds immediately draw attention to themselves and spark curiosity in the observer.

$10/person or $20/family.  Intended for elementary and junior high students and adults; community members welcome.
